What is Buspirone?
Buspirone is an active ingredient used for the treatment of anxiety.

Mechanism of action (MOA) of Buspirone
Anxioselective psychotropic action, relieves anxiety without producing sedation, muscle relaxation or altered wakefulness.
Therapeutic indications, uses and benefits of Buspirone
Anxiety disorder, short-term relief with or without depression.
Buspirone Dosage
Oral.
Adults: 5 mg/3 times daily, may increase by 5 mg/day every 2-3 days.
Maximum: no > 60 mg/day.
Therapeutic response 20-30 mg/day in 2-3 doses.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Warnings and Precautions with Buspirone
- Kidney failure.
- Liver failure.
- Patients with a history of alcohol and drug dependence.
- It should not be used to detoxify patients addicted to benzodiazepines.
- It is not recommended in patients with convulsive disorders, nor concomitant treatment with MAOI.
- Do not administer under 18 years of age.
Liver failure
Caution. The dose should be reduced.
Not recommended in severe liver failure.
Kidney failure
Caution. The dose should be reduced.
Not recommended in severe renal insufficiency.
Interactions
- Plasma concentration increased by: erythromycin, itraconazole, nefazodone.
- Increased serum concentration of: haloperidol.
- Concomitant use with: trazodone produces increased levels of SGPT.
Pregnancy and Buspirone
Lack of studies during pregnancy.
Assess risk/benefit.
Breastfeeding
Avoid. The magnitude of excretion by human milk is not known.
Effects on driving ability
Depending on the dose and individual sensitivity, may decrease attention, alter responsiveness, and produce drowsiness, amnesia, or sedation, especially at the start of treatment or after an increase in dose.
It is not advisable to drive vehicles or operate machinery whose use requires special attention or concentration, until it is proven that the ability to perform these activities is not affected.

- Nausea.
- Sweating/cold.
